August 13, 1946, London, England), best remembered for imaginative novels such as The Invisible Man and The War of the Worlds, prototypes for modern science fiction, was a prolific writer and one of the most versatile in the history of English letters. Herbert George Wells was born on 21 September 1866 in Bromley, Kent County, England, son of Sarah Neal, maid to the upper classes, and Joseph Wells, shopkeeper and professional cricket player. The Wells were quite poor and it was not the happiest of marriages; they would soon live apart though neither re-married. Herbert George Wells, the son of an unsuccessful tradesman, was born in Bromley on 21st September, 1866. After a basic education at a local school, Wells was apprenticed as a draper.
